How to Install Model Railroad Ballast
Begin by shaping and securing the roadbed. Pour a small amount of ballast between the rails, then use a soft brush to move the stone away from the tops of the ties and rail sides.
Add more ballast along both sides of the track and shape the shoulders evenly. Check turnouts carefully before applying glue so no loose stone interferes with the moving points.
Wet the ballast with a fine mist of water, then apply diluted scenery adhesive. Allow the area to dry completely before running trains.
After the ballast is secure, add dirt, cinders, pigments, weeds, and other scenery materials to create a more natural appearance.
Work on one short section at a time. It is easier to add more ballast than to remove too much.
