Make the Track Fit the Location
Fresh gray ballast is only the starting point. Adding weathering and other scenery materials helps show how the track is used, maintained, and affected by railroad activity.
Consider adding:
- 122 Yard Mix for older yards, sidings, and secondary tracks
- 103 Black Cinder around service areas, engine facilities, and older track
- 2000 Industrial Dirt beside low-maintenance and industrial track
- 113 Coal around coal yards, loading areas, and coal-handling facilities
- Pigments for rust, grime, dust, oil stains, and color variation
- Fine weeds and ground cover around lightly used or abandoned track
Use lighter weathering on a well-maintained main line. Apply heavier weathering in yards, terminals, service areas, and industrial locations where dirt, spills, and debris naturally collect.
Vary the colors and materials from one area to another so every track does not look exactly the same.
